A few years ago, a new handpiece was added to the LightSheer laser, the longstanding gold standard for hair removal in lighter skin types. The Duet has a suction attachment which brings the skin into a cup in the handpiece. This action causes the blood vessels in the skin to be stretched so they will absorb less of the laser heat. Stretching the skin also helps in decreasing the discomfort. No topical anesthesia is used. Also the handpiece is significantly bigger so the treatment times are marked reduced (by about 2/3's): Underarms in 3 minutes, bikini in 5 minutes, backs in about 15 minutes. The company reports the efficacy (results) are the same for both laser handpieces. There are some areas where the larger handpiece (called the HS for high speed) cannot be used such as the labial and chin area, so in those areas, the smaller, traditional handpiece (ET) is used.
