I'm in the fitness industry and compete in Figure so I weight lift on a very regular basis. I'm concerned about placement of the implant because of how active I am but how little fat/tissue I have. What would you recommend??

Form Stable Implant Best

With thin persons, a submuscular implant works best. The problem with women who exercise their chest muscles a lot is distortion and gravitation of the implant laterally. This is a perfect place for the use of a "form stable" or cohesive implant. Since it is essentially a solid implant, we see very little distortion. or lateral displacement. I use them for all of my patients heavily into fitness.

Under or over the muscle

Since you are very athletic and muscular, I am assuming that you have very little body fat. The less fatty tissue you have, the harder it is to camouflage the implant; in other words, an implant placed over the muscle will look very fake, and you may have more issues with rippling. I would recommend placing the implant under the muscle for a more natural look. In my patients, I have noticed that most do not have issues with chest weakness or problems with implant distortion... more

Implant placement for athletic woman...

Most body building/athletic women tend to have the implants placed under the muscle. This will make the breasts look more natural, rather than having them look fake and/or unusual. However, sometimes when the implant is placed under the muscle, some irregularities may be seen with movement, so it is important not to go too big. Make sure to choose an experienced board certified plastic surgeon with whom you are comfortable with in order to achieve... more

Implant placement in body builders

Without an exam it is hard to say but you will have to weight the thing tissues of your chest palcing them subglandular vs. potential animation deformities if placed under the muscle.

Split muscle or subfascial breast implants for athletic women

Athletic women have a unique issue when considering breast implants: because they are thin and fit, implants over the muscle lack coverage and look fake, while under is problematic because of the potential for animation deformities which can be a very significant problem. For that reason I developed the split muscle technique, first published about 7 years ago, specifically for these patients. It was initially a correction of animation deformities and it quickly became apparent that it was... more

Submuscular Implants Almost Always Superior

I feel that virtually all breast implants should be placed below the muscle. This is especially true in someone like you who has little tissue and/or fat. You will also obtain a better result if you use a silicone rather than a saline implant.

Breast Augmentation in body builders

Your question is more common than you may think. I have done the procedure for amateur and professional body builders for years and we always go under the muscle with a dual plane technique. I'm sure you have seen some fellow competitors with implants over the muscle. Not a good look at all.

Breast Implant Placement for Athletes

I regularly perform breast augmentation surgery for patients who participate in body building, fitness and figure competitions. While many are initially concerned about sub-pectoral placement and the potential for distortion of the appearance of augmented breasts when the pec major contracts, I am absolutely confident that the aesthetic outcome for these patients will be far superior with implants placed under the muscle. A pre-pectoral implant in a slender patient, especially one with... more

Breast Augmentation for Fitness Competitor?

Thank you for the question. I would recommend sub muscular ( dual plane) silicone gel breast augmentation for patients with your lifestyle and body type. As you know, you have very little “coverage” and are therefore very susceptible to breast implant rippling/palpability if the implants are placed in the sub glandular position. Because of your weightlifting, you may experience some “distortion” of the breast implants with your activities;... more
