Can I Participate in Fencing if I Have Breast Implants?

My daughter is on the fencing team at her school. I am a former fencer and would love to spar with her so she can have extra practice. We would fence foil, which is the lightest weapon, and will use practice foils, which have a masking tape ball on the end. The protective gear which is relevant to the chest area is a Kevlar jacket, plastron to protect the artery by the underarm and a plastic chest protector. Is this risky in terms of possible implant rupture?

Fencing after breast augmentation

If you do not pierce the skin, you will not injure the implants. Use proper protective gear. Donald R. Nunn MD Atlanta Plastic Surgeon.

Fencing unlikely to cause breast implant reupture

Breast implants should not produce any significant limitation is sports activity and fencing is included. With proper protection what cannot penetrate the skin will not rupture a breast implant so participation is fine after recovery. Best of luck, peterejohnsonmd

Breast implants and fencing

As a former fencer myself I can assure you that you'll be fine even if your daughter gets very aggressive. The metal plates should cover your implants well. I would suggest holding off however if you have just had surgery; most surgeons would ask you to wait until 6 weeks after surgery to begin fencing again, given the amount of upper body activity this entails. Best wishes, /nsn.
