How painful are internal stitches?

I'm five weeks post op and have a small sharp object under the skin near my incisions. Surgeon said it's internal stitches that she can remove in a few weeks- I'm in lots of pain. Can stitch under skin really cause this?

  • Yes, stitches coming up under the skin can feel like a needle,
  • Most of these sutures are dissolving, getting softer with time.
  • But if a suture I can feel is hurting a patient, I give local anesthetic and try to remove it.
  • Ask your surgeon is this is a possibility for you. Best wishes.
