MSM and Rhinoplasty

Hi. I'm thinking about getting a rhinoplasty procedure and was curious if the MSM (Methyl Sulfonyl Methane) I take as a supplement for my skin is contraindicated for this type of surgery? Since it's my understanding that MSM plays a role in connective tissue formation (like cartilage formation) and since a nose job deals with cartilagenous structures, would taking it before and after a nose job be an issue? Specifically with respect to the healing process? Thanks in advance for your answers.

MSM and Rhinoplasty

MSM  is a natually occurring substance found in meat, fish, and cow's milk. I'm not aware of any contraindiction to its use before or after surgery. However to be safe, I recommend you stop using it 2 weeks before surgery.

It is best to get off all herbal supplements for at least two weeks prior to any kind of elective cosmetic surgery. Many of the herbal supplements interfere with both anesthesia and the normal healing process and it is best to just stay off of them.

Rhinoplasty and medications

There is no study to date that I am aware of regarding the use of MSM and rhinoplasty results.  To be safe, it would be wise to cease this medication prior to surgery and be certain that both the surgeon and anesthesiologist are aware that you are taking it.  Good luck. Jason Hess, MD

MSM and rhinoplasty.

I'm not aware of any contraindication for surgery. You should run this by your internist though to be sure since plastic surgeons are not as versed in these as they are.

MSM and Rhinoplasty

No literature of this relationship of anesthetics and MSM. Just to be safe I would recommend stopping the MSM for 3 weeks prior the operation. From MIAMI Dr. Darryl J. Blinski, 305 598 0091

MSM supplementation and cosmetic or plastic surgery

I am not aware about the literature on MSM as it is not a commonly studied supplement in the medical journals. IT is commonly used for patients with arthritis but I could not find any definitve recommendations prior to joint surgery other than a random piece of advice to cease its use 4 days prior to surgery.
