Scarring after breast reduction

THe incidence and degree of scarring really varies from individual to individual and from one ethnic group to another. It would be impossible to predict your risk of post-operative scarring. If you have had any other incisions on the abdomen or elsewhere, that would be a good indication of how you might heal. There are some techniques that use shorter scars, such as a vertical mammoplasty, which might be a better option for you because of your concerns.

I have operated on many African american pts for breast reductions surgery. There is definitely a higher incidence of hypertrophic scarring in this patient population, but i would say that despite this the vast majority of breast reduction patients are happy to have had the surgery irregardless of the scars. The fact is that even with this additional information, the best anyone could do is offer you an educated guess about what your scars would look like- but you can get useful information by looking at a lot of photographs of other patients who have had the same operation by the same surgeon.

Breast reduction scarring

Patients with darker skin are at higher risk for formation of hypertrophic or keloidal scars after surgery. These are distinct from one another. The keloid is a benign mass which forms and grows at a surgical scar site whereas hypertrophy indicates a red, thickened scar. Family and personal history are good indicators for the risk. Either condition can be treated, if and when it develops, with Kenalog injections, tape or gel. This is certainly a consideration to discuss with your... more
