Messed up permanent make up

A couple of weeks ago I decided to get permanent makeup. It was for my eyebrows, lips and eyes. The eyeliner was done really really badly. It gives my left eye a strange lopsided look because the tattoo is not done right. I could kick myself for doing this on a whim. I just opened the yellowpages and picked someone. Now I'm embarassed to be seen and I lose sleep thinking about how bad it looks. Do you know who I should go to for removing the messed up eyeliner tattoo?

noted that we have received many comments about personal experiences with permanent makeup, but few permanent makeup reviews. If you've had permanent makeup, please write a review here. Thank you! Tom

Hi Barb - I have only had a small area treated but so far have not lost any hairs growing on that part of the tattoo. I am not too worried because I know they use a different kind of laser and a different pulse strength for hair removal, so hairs should not be affected with the tattoo removal laser. The colour does not go 'splotchy' (I think I know what you mean by that anyway!), my brown tattoos have gone blue for now, but that is because the laser has removed the red that was mixed with the blue to make brown. I have had treatment on the end of the other brow a couple of years back and the same thing happened - it went blue and I was like arrgh! But the laser surgeon told me not to worry, and the next time I went the blue was removed and the tattoo disappeared (with no hair loss!). The only thing is that the hairs turn temporarily gray/white because of the laser beam, but when they grow back they will be normal coloured. The only possible way, that I can see, that your eyebrow hairs might be affected is if the pigment in the follicle was destroyed by the laser (tattoo removal lasers are designed to target pigment-in the tattoo). But if that did happen, there is no reason why the hairs shouldn't grow back, they may just not be coloured anymore, but you can always sort that out with eyebrow dye! I know laser seems scary but it really isn't that bad (except for the price!) and you will feel so much better about yourself when you get rid of the tattoos. Caroline - I have tried tattoo-off, which is pretty much the same as the tat-b-gone system but by a different company. It did absolutely nothing for my tattoo, and I'm pretty sure I know why (read my 14th feb post about hydroquinone). Victoria - saline solution will not remove the tattoo, from what I have read it works by dispersing the ink particles so they look faded. It's a rare treatment though so you might struggle to find someone to treat you. Dani - I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding someone to treat you in America, you guys seem to have everything over there! But as you asked my laser surgeon is called Dr. Kohli and works at a private family business (which is registered with the healthcare comission) in the centre of Manchester - http://www.manchesterlaser.com/ Hope my advice helped. Good luck girls! I shall keep you posted on my treatment, my next laser appointment is in a few days time x

I had eye liner & lip color done by a sadistic Korean woman w/no anesthetic 4 or 5 yrs ago. I had her start out doing an area that was less than I wanted (on my lips), then kept going back till the area was right. I did the same when I got my lips enhanced. For the eyeliner, she made it too dark in one place so I asked her to fix it. She tattooed "skin color" over it. It's way lighter than my skin, but fortunately it's a small area & I can put eye liner over it. I'd like to have my next lip coloration (with the enhancement, my upper lip has been raised about 3 mm) done with local anesthesia. The woman who originally did them kept saying "Oh, you American women can't take pain. Korean women never flinch or make me stop". It really really hurt. But I guess I did stumble onto someone who kept the tattooing within bounds (just found her in an ad in the paper).

So sorry to hear about your ill-applied eyeiner. Too bad you didn't check the tech out first. There are so many poor permanent make-up techs with very little or poor training. One of the things you can do to start lightening the pigment it is to get a good eye cream with glycolic acids in it. OTC would be about 8%. A good spa may carry facial products that may have a 20% . When you have an eyeliner done, I tell my clients to NOT use glycolics as it will lighten the color. So this is what you want to do. You can also get some sun exposure. UV rays can lighten the pigment, too. So go without sunglasses for a while, but always use sunscreen on the rest of your face. If the eyeliner is just crooked, maybe you can find someone to do the other side to make it look a little more even. Good luck. Marriucci (Maria)

HI KATHRYN, HOW DID YOUR LASER TREATMENT GO?

Hey Caroline, it went okay thankyou. He didn't do quite as much as I had asked him to so I'm going to have to ask him to do a bit more next time I go. The area is sore and looks darker than ever right now because it is bruised and the ink has broken up but it should start to fade in a week or so. It's also itching a bit (but apparantly that is a good sign and means it is healing) so I've been wearing a plaster on it at night so I don't scratch it, and have been putting vaseline/hydrocortisone cream on it during the day to soothe it. The doctor says I will need another 3/4 treatments, and probably another 2 on top of that because of the little bit he missed (I'll have to start the treatment from scratch on that part..) but I'm hoping I won't need that many - I didn't when I had my other eyebrow done, two treatments and it was gone! Have you thought about getting any treatment done yet? x

Hi Kathryn, thanks for your comments and name of your Dr. I'm confused at this point re your eyebrow tattoo removal. It sounds like you got one eyebrow done completely with two treatments, but now the other eyebrow can take anywhere up to 4 or 5 treatments. Also, it sounds like you are going to a different place for the second eyebrow??? Sorry, just trying to understand what the procedure entails. I understand it is not totally predictable, but these sound like very different experiences, and I'm assuming both of your eyebrows were the same--or did all the other treatments you tried cause the two eyebrows to be different? Also, please anyone else who is having success in removal please write. thanks. Hi also to Ashley. How are your eyebrows looking?

Hi Dani, sorry for the confusion. I am going to the same place for both eyebrows, it's just that I am having them treated 2 years apart as I couldn't bear to have them both treated at once! My right eyebrow, which I had done first (not the whole thing coz my eyebrow hair covers the main part) was a lot lighter to begin with than the left, I have no idea why as I had them both done on the same day and the ink came out of the same pot (I am guessing it had something to do with the skills of the makeup 'artist'). So as there was only a small amount of ink it didn't take long to remove at all. My left eyebrow however is quite a lot darker and has more ink in it, so it is taking longer to break up. I honestly don't believe it will take 4-5 more treatments though, I am pretty sure that's what he told me when I was having my other eyebrow done and it only needed 2. Have you had any luck finding someone to treat your eyebrows yet?
