Malocclusion Following Maxillofacial Surgery?

I fractured the body of the right side of my mandible but my ramus, alveolar and TMJ remained intact. I had maxillofacial surgery to reconstruct the body of my mandible using titantium fixations. My maxilla was not affected but I do suffer from skeletal malocclusion. What may be the cause of the malocclusion and what are my options to restore proper occlusion? I am shying away from occlusal adjustment since my teeth are not the cause of the problem. My surgery took place five months ago

Mandibular fractures can cause occlusal discrepancy

Your fracture may have been put together but at the occlusal level, there may be discrepancy. Even if the surgeon used an arch bar on both upper and lower jaw to stabilize your occlusion prior to fixating the mandibular fragments, the fixated segments may not fully be approximated. You may need to see an orthodontist to help correct the malocclusion caused by the trauma. Typically this would involve braces on your teeth and using intermaxillary elastics. Good luck. more
