Does Makeup Age You if You Sleep in It?

There are many makeup companies/ and a general "old wives tale" I have heard was that makeup ages you from 3 - 10 days if you sleep in it overnight. Well -then why does it not age us when we are awake? Does makeup age us in general? Where does this come from and is there any truth to this or scientific evidence?
