Why is Liposonix Generally More Expensive Than CoolSculpting?

Liposonix and CoolSculpting seem like similar procedures, but the prices I was quoted were quite different. Liposonix costs $3500 while CoolSculpting costs $1500. And even on this site, the average prices for these two procedures are also different. What makes Liposonix more expensive?
Cost of liposonix
Liposonix often ends up costing more because a larger area is treated. Typically 3 or more passes are required and there is a charge with each pass. Coolsculpting is done on a more defined area. The costs of coolsculpting vary by site and applicator used (large vs small). For small areas with liposonix - like small outer thighs - liposonix in our clinic is $750 and coolsculpting would be $750 each thigh (if applicator fits). Disposable costs with Liposonix are very expensive for the clinic.
Liposonix vs. CoolSculpting
Usually, Liposonix is done by the physician or physician's extender and takes time whereas the CoolSculpting by Zeltiq is applied to the site and left there during the duration of treatment without an assistant or physician needing to peform the treatment.
Please understand though, that the optimum results with CoolSculpting has now been realized to occur often by performing overlapping multiple applicators to a cosmetic unit. Some patients will have two applicators for the upper and lower abdomen but others may need five. The latter increases the cost so don't just compare prices from one office to the other unless you are seen in consultation. In my practice, a physician always examines the patient to determine what the best plan is for the number and location of applicators to be applied. Then the patient will be given the cost of the treatment and how many treatments might be necessary if more than one is determined to be beneficial. Secondary treatments are delivered four to six weeks after the first, or four months or later depending on different circumstances of individual patient.s

Liposonix vs. Coolsculpting for noninvasive body shaping
In order to understand why the costs for Liposonix and Zeltiq coolsculpting are different, it may help to describe how each one works. Coolsculpting uses cold to essentially freeze localized fat, which results in destruction of some of the fat cells which are then reabsorbed by the body. The treatment is done by applying 2 paddles over an area with excess fat, and then the paddles are left on for about a half hour. Liposonix on the other hand uses focused ultrasound energy, so the layer of fat and the area to be treated can be mapped out with precision. This means that each pulse cycle is applied by a medical prefessional, so it is a hands-on procedure. With both procedures, it takes 1-3 months to see the full effect.
