What would be the best way to fix a lateral incisor that is pushed quite far forward, and sticks out? I always wanted braces when I was younger but never got them, and now that I'm an adult I'm not sure if I'd feel comfortable with braces, although I don't always feel comfortable with my tooth!

From the picture your canine looks great. It should be the same length as your central incisor. The only reason it may need to be lengthened is if is too short to protect your teeth when moving your lower jaw side to side. This needs to be determined by your dentist.
I would suggest you speak to your dentist and have him refer to a periodontist who deal with
gum defects.
If not satisfied with your dentists answer, then i suggest you call a periodontist in your area.(or if have friend who can recommend one)
