I'm 39, 5'8" weight 390; my normal blood pressure is 70/110 and I recently passed a stress test with flying colors. I have successfully undergone several surgeries in the past without complications - chin implant, left breast implant, breast lift, tumescent liposuction (4 liters) in 1995; a lap band in 2007; and tubal ligation. Would I be a good candidate for large volume liposuction? What is the maximum volume of fat that could be removed in one surgery in Florida? Hospital stay assumed.

Large Volume Liposuction: How much?

To my knowledge, the largest amount of fat removed, was in the range of 18 liters and required about a 3 day stay in the hospiital. However, just because it can be done does not mean it should be done.

Liposuction is not the safest for morbidly obese

There may be too many serious and life threatening risks with liposuction for someone very overweight. Blood clots and fluid shifts and blood pressure problems can occur.

Candidate for large volume liposuction

At 390 lbs I would say that you are definitely not a candidate for liposuction small or large volume.  You need to beevlautaed by your bariatric doctor and perhaps have your lap band adjusted.

Limitations of Large Volume Liposuction

In MY opinion the leading indications for an operation should NOT be ability to pay, a pulse and a warm body. Among the factors SHOULD be an analysis of benefit VS. risk to the patient. It has been demonstrated that removing more than 5 liters of supernatant fat in one procedure is associated with significant fluid shifts which require monitoring and fluid replacement. Since 5 liters translates to just over 10 pounds, liposuction when performed safely within these limits cannot remove... more

Large volume liposuction

Large volume liposcution is defined as liposcution more than 5,000 cc's.  This volume was set to establish some safe parameters for outpatient liposuction on healthy patients.  If you are not healthy or doing more than 5,000 cc's then the procedure should be done with more extensive postoperative monitering. Liposcution is not for weight loss and is best performed when you are close to a normal body weight. The maximum that can be removed is very high but you... more

Large volume liposuction: worth the risk?

Safe practice with liposuction will limit suction volume to 5 liters at any one setting to keep risks to a minimum. This is still quite a large volume as you imagine five one liter  bottles lined up. Large volume liposuction, volumes over five liters is possible as a hospital procedure, though at what price? Risks of bleeding and fluid shifts from bruising become significant. Liposuction has a very poor track record at reducing weight, or controlling weight. You should look... more
