I had a large cyst removed with a cortisone injection which left me with quite a depression or divet. How soon can I have some filler put in it? Is it best I wait a certain length of time for it to heal first? Also, can I use a retinol cream to help stimulate collagen?
Answer: Divot in cheek after cortisone injection This, unfortunately, can happen following steroid injections. In many cases, the depression will improve with time. I would definitely bring this to the attention of the physician that performed the injection. I would definitely wait several months before considering any injectable treatment of fat transfer to the area to determine how much of that volume will return. In the meantime, you can use Retin-A containing products but the product shouldn't create any significant change in the volume loss in your cheek. I hope this information is helpful for you.Stephen Weber MD, FACSDenver Facial Plastic Surgeon

Answer: Skin Depression After Cortisone Injections Most would suggest waiting 3-6 months to see if the atrophy reverses, but most of the time it doesnt. This is due to improper placement or too high dosage into the deeper layers of the skin and fat. I suggest going to someone with experience in treating scars of this type, as there are many options but more permanent ones such as Radiesse, Sculptra, Artefill, or Silikon work much better than HA type fillers (Juvederm, Restylane, Perlane). Best, Dr. Emer.

Answer: Facial depression after a steroid injection You did not say how long ago you had the injection(s), but I would suggest waiting at least three months for things to settle and see how it looks. One of the side effects of steroid injections into lesions in or under the skin is dermal atrophy, which is what appears to have happened. Before using a dermal filler to correct the depression, I would make certain that there no left over cyst or lesions. I don't really think that the retinol cream will do much for you. Good luck.
