Juvederm gone in a week?

I had Juvederm injected in the periorbital lines, nasolabial, chin, upper and lower lips. It has been a week and the swelling is gone and so is the Juvederm. Except for some (uneven) fullness in the upper lips, everyone I know said they don't see any difference. Neither do I. What happened? I went to a very well known dermatologist who is supposd to have a lot of experience.

A: Juvederm is there, but you need more!

Stephen A. Goldstein, MD

Juvederm is comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA) which is naturally occuring chemical found in human skin.  In fact, HA is a sugar molecule.  It's physical correction of wrinkles is due to  HA soaking up water like a sponge and the molcule becoming larger.  It needs to be... more

A: Juvederm probably isn't gone, but you may need more

Felix Kuo, MD

Initially after Juvederm, all the treated areas will appear more full because of the associated swelling.  This product attracts a lot of water in the skin.  After about 1 week, most of that swelling is gone, and it may appear as though there is no product left. It is very soft so you may not... more

A: Juvederm probably not gone, but correction is hard to see

Steven F. Weiner, MD

You're probably saying, if I can't see it, then it really doesn't matter if it is there or not.  My first question is how many syringes were used.  You mention a lot of areas to correct.  I would use at least 3 or 4 syringes for this.  Any less than this, you will be spreading the filler... more

I would agree with Dr. Weiner in that you had a number of areas treated and so effective treatment would realistically require at least 3-4 syringes.  Undertreatment is one of the main causes of suboptimal outcome; simply put, if you don't use product and spread it out too much, you're not going to see... more

A: Juvederm is still there

Ralph R. Garramone, MD

The most likely expanation is that you need more. Given all the areas that were treated I would expect that not enough was used to adequately address all areas. The more areas that are treated the more product needs to be used. It is possible that the product was not injected at the correct level, however, if... more

A: Sounds like you had a lot of filler placed.

Robert M. Freund, MD

You describe a wide area of your face that was filled. If you used one vial of filler in all those areas, then you can expect to see a mild to minimal improvement in all of the areas treated. The periorbital areas typically require 2-3 cc for adequate treatment. The lips can take up to 1 cc by themselves and... more

A: Probalby need more Juvederm

If you feel that you did not get a significant effect from the Juvederm, then you probably need more.

A: Addressing Juvederms Disappearance

Arnold R. Oppenheim, MD

I would like to offer a few possible explanations.  Perhaps, you received better correction than you thought. I think the best results are when a patient is told they look relaxed or younger, i.e. when they do not look like they had had anything done. Maybe, you achieved this success without knowing... more

A: Juvederm likely spread between too many areas

Hisham Seify, MD, PhD

These are many areas. My guess is that a small amount of filler material was used, and it was diluted between all these areas. It also depends on how many lines you had and what technique was used.
