Has IPL Permanently Damaged my Skin?

In Dec 2009 i had my first IPL session for dark pigmentation under each eye. I had a total of 3 sessions over the course of 3-4mths & each session was more painful than the previous but i was advised by the beauty therapist this was normal. After the 3rd session i cancelled further visits as i felt there was something wrong. I am now permanently left with a red burning streak under each eye which is intensified by any heat, sunlight, hot shower, temperature, etc. Please can anyone help me?
