Internal Abscess After Breast Reduction?

I had breast reduction surgery about a month ago. 2 days ago, I started to experience large amounts of puss coming from the bottom of my breast and noticed a small opening(hole). I went to the ER and the doctor there prescribed Bactrim. I saw my PS today and he said I had an abscess. I also had something that looked like tissue come out of the hole. It was light pink/white and the texture was rubbery. I was wondering if the open hole will close up on its own or if ill have to get stitches later?

Wound Infection

Dear Rachel, Once the infection is treated and resolved the the pink/white tissue will eventually allow the area to heal.  This will not require additional sutures.  Time and good local wound care will take care of the problem. Dr. ES

Open hole of breast

I am sorry you are having a problem. It may very well be an abscess but it is also not uncommon to have fat necrosis which may look like an infection sometimes.  Follow your doctor's instructions. You may need to have a debridement, but sometimes it heals with local wound care and no surgery.

Breast reduction and drainage.

IT sounds as if you are experiencing some degree of fat necrosis which is somewhat common with breast reduction. This may require prolonged deressing changes and take some time to resolve. Rarely will it require immediate surgery. Wound care is a reasonable option for now. Consdier possible revisionary procedures at a later date.
