I had an open umbilical hernia repair on November 2009 and how have an 8" scar with a massive incisional hernia. The surgeon never believed me when I said I was in extreme pain after the surgery. I spent 2 months in bed and about 4 months before, I could walk upright. I have gained 20 lbs from inactivity. I wonder, can Liposuction help relieve some of the weight pressure when I get the incisional hernia repaired? I was told I should get a Mini Tummy Tuck but the plastic surgeon said I don't have enough skin for that. I had a Tummy Tuck years ago with no complications.

Liposuction would be inappropriate

What you need to do is first lose the extra weight because it adds intraabdominal pressure which will increase the failure rate of your hernia repair.  Then have the hernia repaired.  After you have recovered, have whatever cosmetic surgery done that you need.  You might not need any at all.

Incisional hernia

You need to deal with having your incisional hernia repaired first. Once repair is complete, you have sufficiently convalesced, and your general surgeon feels the time is right for you to consider body contouring surgery, you can consult then with an American Board of Plastic Surgery certfied plastic surgeon in your area.

In general, Liposuction is not a good technique facilitating weight-loss in the patient. It is very effective, however providing localized recontouring of specific areas that remain of concern once the... more
