Impressions or No Impressions?

I have a very high gag reflex so getting braces without impressions would be ideal. However, from what I have heard some offices that use Suresmile still take impressions. Are impressions needed or not with Suresmile?

Impressions

Suresmile uses computer technology (Computer aided design) to fabricate special wires that are custom bent for a particular patient. The manufacturer claims that this can shorten treatment time almost in half. There are several good systems out there and suresmile may not always be necessary. It can add extra expense. No need for impressions with SureSmile

Many orthodontists (and other dentists as well) are moving away from impressions. The technology is already there to basically get everything you need with digital computer technology. I am a Sure Smile provider, and I don't take impressions. I use what is called an OraScanner to get images of your teeth and gums that can then be used to fabricate the wire I use to move your teeth. Does Orthodontic Treatment with SureSmile Require Impressions?

SureSmile is a state-of-the-art treatment technique which uses CAD/CAM-like wire fabrication that can produce better results with less pain in a shorter amount of time (about 40% less!) No Impressions during the SureSmile process

In our office the SureSmile process is to obtain a three-dimensional scan of the patient’s teeth. This can be done with either a very accurate 3D x-ray machine (we have an iCAT) or an optical scanner called the OraScanner.
