Hypothyroidism...safe to Have Breast Reduction?

Question

I went in for my pre-op on May 7th, scheduled to have surgery on May 17th. At my pre-op the PS found a nodule on my thyroid and seemed rather concerned. He sent me to get bloodwork done and also scheduled me for an ultrasound on my thyroid. I just got the results from my blood test on the 11th and it said I had hypothyroidism. Since finding this out I have been petrified of having this surgery. I have 3 kids, I don't want them to have to go through losing a parent and have to grow up without me.

	Well controlled hypothyroidism is not a contraindication to breast reduction surgery. Controlling the thyroid hormone levels may help you reach a long-term stable weight,  if this has been a concern.

	Assuming you are otherwise healthy,  and have chosen your plastic surgeon/anesthesiologist/facility carefully,  it is very likely that you will be able to undergo the procedure AND watch your kids grow up.

Hypothyroidism is very easily treated with medication and will not increase your risks during a breast reduction. Though medication will readily correct the hypothyroidism, you may wish to delay breast reduction until the thyroid nodule is fully sorted out.

hypothyroidism is easily treated with medication usually by an endocrinologist. once they are happy with the medication level for  your thyroid supplementation, you should be able to safely undergo surgery.
