I had Smart lipo 17 days ago. When can I return to working out?

A: You should be able to now

Joel Schlessinger, MD

Unless you had a very challenging recovery, you ought to be able to work out now. Depending on the other method used with the SmartLipo, recovery can vary. But if you had the tumescent method, you ought to be ready to go now.

A: very soon

Every dr will have his own philosophy. i let my pts walk and do most things that don't drive their heart rate way up after 2-3 days. after 7-10 days, i give them essentially unrestricted activities. however, they need to listen to their body and if things hurt a lot, they need to reduce their activity.

I agree with Dr Schlosser that you should easily and safely resume your aerobic activity at the gym.  In most instances, I recommend that patients start with a light walk the day after Smart lipo.  The patients who have had their thighs done have to wait a few days before resuming vigorous walking activity and should start out with a low impact treadmill walk.  At the two week mark all should be back to normal activity levels.  Our patients are in the office several times during the two week post procedure interval having their incisions monitored and skin texture checked for hematomas and induration.  We use a gentle ultrasonic massage to smooth and break up any inconsistencies and are able to give advice as to how much activity is appropriate for each individual.

One of the true benefits of Smart Lipo is that you can return to normal activies quickly. For trunk areas like abdomen, flanks, etc. I recommend waiting 2 weeks to return to full activity. At that point, you may return to the gym to your full normal workout. If a particular exercise is very painful then common sense would dictate not to push it too hard. For the legs, you can exercise in 10 days  and the arms in about a week or so. These are general guidelines, but trying to do it sooner increases the risk of seromas (fluid collections) which could ultimately slow down your recovery. Walking as much as you like can begin the day after surgery. So at Day 17 please feel free to get  back to the gym. Here's wishing you a speedy recovery.

I think you can go to the gym but do not do exercise that involve the muscle of the area involved. For example you don't want to do sit ups at this point, if you had abdominal area or 'love handles' done. And the best advice is to ask your doctor.
