How can I get my makeup to stay on longer?

Making Makeup Last
- Rest is absolutely vital!
- Good skin grooming and healthy eating is just as important
- A primer is good if you need it.
- Dual powders are my absolute fave as they can be applied in various intensities, with or without water or moisturizer depending on your need, have an SPF protection factor and are fast and easy. I keep trying the minerals, but find they get too shiny too soon - especially for people with oily skin. Skillfully applying dual powders can achieve the same look as the minerals.
- Sunblock used as a moisturizer with dual powder applied over top is great for a JLo glow.
- Long-wearing liquid foundation can be great too, but should be lightly dusted with a powder, or better still a finishing powder similar to Dermablend, which makes the makeup stay even longer and keeps it water resistant.
- Never put liquid or cream shadow on the eyelid - only dual powder, which creates a great primer for your shadows that will last all day. Minimal retouching around nose, inner eye corner and mouth is usually needed by lunch and late afternoon for most people. However, minimal is better than starting over.
If we are talking about the face, i.e. foudation, there are several ways to deal with this.
- Make sure you've chosen a foundation formula appropriate for your skin type, and the climate you will be wearing it in.
- Powder is also important, especially if you have an oily or combination skin or you live in a very humid climate. Powder blends and sets the foundation for longer wear.
- Primer under your foundation will help it wear longer.
- Try applying your foundation with a slightly damp sponge. Even a liquid formula can be applied this way for a more sheer coverage and longer wear. For more coverage, just layer.
- If you work at a desk, be aware of sitting with your face resting on your hands.
- Don't rub your face or eyes.
- Finally, after a few hours, even the most professional makeup is going to need some touching up!
One simple word PRIME! There are several makeup primers available to use on your face or on certain areas of your face. For example I use a primer, but under my eyes only before I use my concealer. I find my concealer to glide right on and last through the day and the primer creates a smoother apperance under my eye area. The concealer does not crease or sit in lines.
A makeup Primer is to be used sparingly on the face. It is the first product you apply to your face after your moisturizer then move on to foundation application. Your best tool is your finger tips in this case. A foundation brush will absorb most of it because you use so little. As far as textures go there are various types of primers some are in a lotion form others a clear gel. This choice will be up to you, whatever feels comfortable on your skin. Primers can actual help to control oil as well as diminish the redness some of us have in our skin. I always have primer in my artistry box. This is one product you will not regret adding into your makeup bag!
- The first step is to prepare your skin so that the makeup can adhere. If you have oily skin, use a mattifying product, like Peter Thomas Roth Max Anti-Shine, underneath your makeup. It will absorb oil which will keep your makeup from sliding off.
- For drier skin, use a silicone based primer or moisturizer, which will even out the texture of your skin and help makeup to stick.
- Also use an eyeshadow primer, particularly if your eyelids are oily.
- Finally, choose a makeup designed for your skintype.
- Choose an oil-free foundation if your skin is oily, and a hydrating one if your skin is dry.
- Skip cream shadows and blushes if you have oily skin.
- Finally, try a finishing product, like Make Up For Ever Mist & Fix, to lock makeup in place.
I am partial to mineral cosmetics because they are natural and generally wear fairly long. In general, I have found that the 12 hour, long wear cosmetics on the market that “don’t budge” are generally made of so many ingredients which either help the product stick to the face (in the case of long wear liquid foundations) or they dye the skin giving the illusion that they are still there (long wear lip glosses and lipsticks).
Many of these products, due to the actual ingredients that make them long wear, can irritate skin and cause break-outs. I’m adverse to putting anything on my body potent enough to force absorption and dying of the skin like long wear lip gloss and lipstick. Additionally, with lip products, while it may last a long time, you will inevitably eat a certain portion of the product (read the chemicals). In conclusion, in general, “long wear” products sound good in theory but can have some questionable consequences.
Regardless of what cosmetics you wear here are some general tips that can help your make-up last:
- Don’t touch your face. A lot of make-up is moved, smudged and generally messed up by your unconscious face touching. Try to keep your hands away from your face. Often face touching introduces dirt and bacteria on your hands to your sensitive face. This can cause breakouts as well. So the benefits of staying away from your face will be two-fold!
- Make sure your face is clean before you apply your makeup. Always wash your face before applying cosmetics to ensure you have a clean, oil free slate.
- Don’t over moisturize. Moisture is good. Too much is bad and can be a barrier for your cosmetics to properly adhere to your skin. If you have too much moisturizer on your cosmetics will literally slip off your face and/or move around. When moisturizing, make sure that the moisturizer you apply is completely absorbed into your skin before applying cosmetics. Don’t have time to wait? Try washing your face and then apply your moisturizer. After applying your moisturizer, brush your teeth. By the time you are finished with your teeth your moisturizer should be fully absorbed. If it’s not you might have applied too much.

I suggest using a foundation primer and use a long lasting foundation, I like Estee Lauder Double Wear it as an SPF 15 and last up to 15 hours comes in a liquid and powder. My favorite primer is by Smashbox called Photo Finish and won Allure Editors Choice. Set your foundation with a powder.
