Question

Ashy brown hair - how to get the look?

I love Celine Dion's very ashy light brown hair. How can I achieve this look. My hair is dark brown and I have attempted several times myself and also at salons and never was the color what I was desiring. Even tried bleaching first and then adding color and was not correct color. Any suggestions?

Mousy or Ashy? Opt for Natural

Ashy - not a great sounding word is it?    Colorists use "ash" colors to control red tones and produce a "natural" and "rich" brunette shade.

If you are attracted to the natural-ness and "lack of warmth" in Celine's brown colored hair, then you can duplicate this type of look on your own hair if:  your hair is in good condition (if damaged your hair will "suck-up" any haircolor and appear flat; or green-ish) and you use a "deposit-only" haircolor or demi-permanent haircolor.

Select a shade 1-2 levels lighter than your own brunette hair, apply the color quickly starting at the roots; then onto the mid-lengths and finally onto the ends.  Wait about 5-7 minutes, rinse and shampoo off.

Using a permanent haircolor shade (ashy or natural) will create some "lift" or reddening to your natural hair which defeats the purpose of the tone on tone type of result you desire.  As always, I recommend seeking out a skilled colorist to help you accomplish the look you want.
