What is the Function of a Nasal Base Plumping Graft?

During rhinoplasty the doctor removed some bone from my nasal base. It not only affected the way my nasal base and upper lip look, but my upper lip moves very differently when I talk and eat. If I place an object (like a Q-tip) along the base of my nose under my upper lip. The lip looks and moves as it did before. Would a plumping graft be able to work in the same way? If not any ideas how I can fix my deformity?

Tissue for Nasal Base Plumping graft can often be obtained from the soft tissue in your nose or ear lobe

It does sound like a nasal base plumping graft would address your concerns following your previous rhinoplasty surgery. Tissue for this type of graft can often be obtained from the soft tissue in your nose or, if not available there, it may be obtained from your ear lobe. Another option would be a small silastic or Gortex implant to this location. The results would be a less acute angle where the nose meets the face, in the upper lip region. This is also known as... more

A plumping graft consisting of crushed cartilage may accomplish filling in the area that was removed.

Changing the end of the septum changes the upper lip

Your observation is exactly correct: changing the end of the septum can affect the upper lip--making it longer or sink in where the lip meets your nose. The problem in correcting the change is that the lip needs plenty of "push" to lift it out, and often little filler grafts aren't enough. I use cartilage, rib, or sometimes g Gore-Tex (because it is going over the bone of the upper jaw, not in the nose). These grafts or implants can be placed though small... more

Plumping graft

From what you are describing it does sound as if it would help. Try doing some computer images before to see how it would look before doing the procedure.

How goes a plumping graft improve the lip to nose relationship.

Some time the bone at the base of the nose called nasal spine is removed. This can make the angle of the columella to the upper lip look sharper and make the upper lip look longer. this condition exists in some patients without having had surgery. A graft at the base of the nose or the columella can improve this problem.

Plumping graft with Rhinoplasty

Plumping grafts are for filling out retracted columellas where the upper lip moves up underneath the nose. Silicone grafts or crushed cartilage grafts can be inserted through an incision inside the columella to plump and fill out this region. It (the plumping graft) is a static filling agent which means it by itself would not make your upper lip move differently.

Plump away

The angle between your nose and upper lip are an important key to the overall appearance and balance of your nose. It sounds like a plumping graft would be a nice way to achieve the look you desire but I agree you should discuss this with your surgeon.

Plumping graft for the nasal base.

Plumping graft for the nasal base does exactly what you are doing with the Qtip. Tell your surgeon and he can place the graft.
