1 answer to “Is Fraxel re:pair different from...”

A: Fraxel re: pair is a fractionated laser that treats a predetermined percentage of the skin

Michael A. Persky, MD

There is a brand new laser treatment called Fraxel re:pair™. It was debuted at the American Academy of Dermatology last week in San Antonio, Texas. On January 31, 2008 an impressive demonstration was highlighted on NBC’s Today Show. The unique features of this treatment are that patients in their... more

Hi Jen, It is very important that you see your treating physician frequently until your symptoms resolve. Be patient, and by all means NO picking! Usually within 10-14 days these symptoms should resolve. Keep us informed of your progress. Dr. P

Hi Crane, With the current settings the treatment is effective with just one session (except for the treatment of acne scars with may take 2-3 treatments). Some patients do elect for even more improvement and schedule a second treatment a few months down the line. Be well and good luck. Dr. P

I had the Re:Pair done for my acne scars a little over a week ago. Is it normal not to see any real improvment. All the swelling has went down and I see all the scars that I had before. Will it get better with time? The doc used the highest settings at 70 MJ's and I am still very red. But I am hoping that collagen growth with help lift up these scars and maybe really improve the smaller/shallower scars. Are the results progressive as they are with the Re:Store? Thanks -Schom

Hi Schom, The depth setting is maximum at 70mj, do you know what level the density setting was (5%-70%)? The density setting also determines outcome. The new collagen formation does occur over a few months so that there should be continued improvement. With acne scarring, most patients require additional treatments (a total of 2-3) for optimum results. Staying well hydrated during the healing process as well as maintaining a very healthy diet full of anti-oxidants is also helpful (see "The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth", by Jonny Bowden). Please contact your treating physician with these questions. Much good luck and be well. Dr. P

Thanks for responding. As for the density I am not sure of that. I will call and see. What is the proper density being used for acne scars. I have a few rolling/boxcar scars on my cheek. They seem somewhat deep to me. My doc said that at 70 MJ's it should do a pretty good job. I was told to watch it over the next few months because a lot can happen. Also to increase my results I had a light subcision done on the scarred cheek prior to the Re:Pair so I would only think that it will help with collagen and helped break-up the scar fibers holding it down, what do you guys think? Thank you so much for your time.

Dr. P, Thank your for your quick response. I had a visit yesterday 05/05/08 with my doctor. I quess since this is such a new laser Fraxel re:pair, is it a trial and error process ? I still wish you would have answered my questions in better detail. My doctor told me I was fine and that most of my sweling exept for a few places had gone. I do not pick my face anymore due to the fact I see what it has done, most of the picking was done when I was a teenager I amd 35 now. He did suggest that once I was completely held, and if my chin was still a problem that he could try and shave and/or remove the knots. It seems like you are really up to date with this proceedure. Do you think my settings were to low ?? I am now noticing alot of pits on my checks that I did not see before. I do not consider myself to have fare skin, maybe a just a little fair. However, I do have freckles all over my body and I have hazel eyes and since the treatment, I have no freckles on my face. I quess I am noticing more imperfections on my face since the freckles are gone. Please let me know a little more in detail if you will regarding my prior questions and a response to this email. There is not alot of information on the fraxel re:pair since it is so new, in your patients how long did it take them to get back to there daily routine. I was on the obagi system since August of 07, I did see a change in my skin color. I was having alot of botox treatments for the lines on my forehead and the crowfeet area around my eyes and for the lines on my lips. My doctor told me yesterday that I may still have to have botox treatments, I thought the fraxel re:pair would help all of my problems on my face. Please help since I do not know really much about this fraxel re:pair system. My doctor was the first one to get this laser in NC (there is now only 2 of them in NC). In Dec. of 07 I had one treatment with the co2 laser done on a scar under my eye and seen a lot of improvement. You answering my questions, any information you may have or were I can get more details on the fraxel re:pair will be greatly apperciated. This is a costly procedure and I would like your expert info on these matters. THANK YOU,JE.

I lived in Dallas and had a fraxel laser treatment with the DOT CO2 technology. Is it the same as Fraxel re:pair or Fraxel re:store? I was extremely pleased as it was the first of 4 treatments. But I have now moved out of state and am looking for somewhere that does the same treatment. Is it the same treatment but different terminology?

I'm very interested in the longevity of Fraxel Re:pair. As Fraxel apparently tested this procedure over 18 months ago on 500 patients, is there any info about how long the presumed benefits actually last? Would Re:pair help fill in/diminish a 1 in. long vertical incision scar above my lip (the result of MOHS surgery for basal cell carcinoma?) Does Re: pair work better on thick or or thin skin? Many thanks for your helpful replies!

Looking at my scarring as of now it looks even worse. Is this normal? I am worried that my scarring is deeper due to the Re:Pair. My overall skin texture is worse as well. I know it has only been 1 week, but I hope I did the right thing for my acne scars.

Hi schom, Address these concerns with your physician. For what it is worth, I have never heard of/or seen re: pair cause worsening of acne scarring, or skin texture. Be patient, speak with your physician about moisturizers; hopefully you will see improvement soon. With acne scarring, it may take 2-3 re: pair treatments to get good to great results. Thank you for sharing your experience. Dr. P
