I am a fitness instructor (kick boxing, Step, weights) and I am seeking breast implants. How long do I need to refrain from teaching after surgery? Do I need to take extra precautions?

Exercising after Breast Augmentation
After breast augmentation, I recommend patients wait for one week to start light walking so as to keep their routine needs fullfilled. Actual straining is not recommended for 6 weeks after surgery. In the case of some body builders the implant may be placed on top of the muscle (these circumstances are quite rare) in which case resumption of exercising can be done sooner. My best suggestion is that if in doubt, take 6 weeks off. There's nothing more regrettable than a hematoma soon after...

Return to excercise after
This depends on the intensity and nature of your workouts as well as the location of the implants (over or under the muscle). In the latter instance, you should avoid pectoralis strengthening exercises that tend to displace the implant s laterally (outwards). I genrally recommend that patients avoid wide stance push ups, butterflies, and becnch press.

Refrain from exercise for 2 weeks after a breast augmentation
Hi Mary1972 - I would recommend waiting 2 weeks before restarting your intense workouts. Also, because you frequently use your chest during exercise you may want to consider getting the implants over the pectoralis muscles versus underneath as you will be able to see the implants move as your flex your pecs. Good luck!

Breast implants for a fitness instructor or athlete
It is not uncommon for individuals who compete physically such as aerobics instructors, runners, body builders, to ask about Breast implants and recovery and return to work and training.
The most important factor is choice of implant placement. Breast implants are most often placed under the chest muscle to reduce capsule formation and visibility of the upper implant edge.
Recovery after Breast augmentation is not difficult for most, about six to seven days, probably three days of soreness...

Fitness instructors heal quickly!
Highly fit patients recover and heal very quickly.
However, you still have to give everything a chance to heal strongly on the inside so that you do not develop any complications after surgery.
My patients can go out to dinner the night of surgery, take a shower the night of surgery, and move their hands over their head the night of surgery. However, I want them to wait three weeks before actually working out themselves. But depending upon the nature of what they do with their clients, some...

Breast Augmentation and Fitness Instructor?
Thank you for your question.
You can return to "supervising" 1 week after surgery. After 4-6 weeks, you can probably return but would need to still avoid contact and weight lifting until 3-4 months out from surgery. Patients start with lower body workouts and then proceed with upper body workouts after they get the "green light" from their surgeon - each patient is different with how their recovery process.
I hope this helps.

Fitness Instructor and Breast Implants
Okay this is a little crazy because I just got home from the gym and just had this very conversation. I have my athletic breast augmentation patients get back on the treadmill by 5 days after surgery. And I don't mind them doing arm weights as long as it doesn't involve the pecs.
So you wouldn't be able to demonstrate push-ups or any movement that involves the pecs for 4-6 weeks. You would have to co-train/teach during this period.

Recovery after breast augmentation takes 4-6 weeks
Generally, I have my patients start light exercises 4 weeks after breast augmentation. However, it may take you longer to be "back to normal" given you are an instructor and have to be the leader of the pack. Your chest muscle will be sore for a while!
You may need to modify your training routine, although it may upset your clients who are used to a certain level of intensity.
My recommendation is to "play it by ear" and be honest with yourself and your clients....

Recovery Time after Breast Augmentation
I generally have my patients resume full activity at 4 weeks times. This is really doctor dependant and you will see that different surgeons have different ideas as to when it is safe to proceed.
Good luck.

It is usually about 6-8 weeks for strenuous activities after breast augmentation
I advise my patients with breast augmentation to begin walking fairly early on as a form of mild exercise and to aid in recovery. Most return to light work activities within a week. However, it is best to wait about 6-8 weeks to begin strenuous work activities such as yours, and then, let comfort guide you. If something hurts, it is best to stop, wait a few days, a try again later.

Intensity Workout/Exercise after Breast Augmentation
I generally recommend no heavy lifting or strenuous activity for 3-4 weeks after breast augmentation surgery. As my colleagues have written, you need to give time for your incisions to heal. Once I have evaluated my patient at 4 weeks, I will clear them to slowly and gradually resume activity as tolerated.

Exercise after breast augmentations
Of course you should do as your doctor says but in my practice I ask patients to refrain from any exercise level activities for 2 weeks, then begin light cardio and light weights, and finally get back to full chest activities at 8 weeks when the body has healed a fully lined pocket around the implants.

Recommend 3 weeks full healing after breast implants for fitness instructor
Since you are active as an instructor I recommend 3 weeks for full healing. This gives your body a chance to accommodate the new breasts. Best of Luck and Merry Merry!

Kick boxing and implants
I usually have patients wait at least 3-4 weeks before going back to high impact aerobic type classes. I instruct them to wait 6-8 weeks for weight lifting and really vigorous workouts. Activities that increase the heart rate or blood pressure in the early post-op period can lead to a hematoma.

Considerations for implants in athletic women
Your return to athletic activity after augmentation is an important question and is affected by several factors. Most imprtant of these is the choice to go under the muscle.
Since athletic women tend to be thin, muscle coverage is important but there are potential drawbacks. One of these is a potential for what are called animation deformities, since with the standard dual plane technique the pectoral muscle is cut off of its natural attachment to the ribs.

Breast implants in a fitness instructor
If you ask 10 plastic surgeons this question you will probably get 12 different answers. Rather than defining a time period it is better to understand why there may be an activity restriction.
First, it is a risk vs benefit situation. What is the risk of resuming fitness instruction within a week? There would be a greater chance of pain and a greater chance of bleeding and possible implant displacement. These would be more so with under the muscle vs over the muscle.
Second, what can...

Use common sense with exercise after Breast Augmentation
I think its reasonable to return to the type of dynamic exercise that you do (kick boxing etc) after a 3-4 week rest. You'll be uncomfortable doing aerobic work outs (stuff that involves shifting your weight ie bouncing) for a few weeks. Once you feel comfortable doing this stuff- you can resume. Listen to your body and use common sense.
Light walking exercise and tread-mill or elliptical machine work outs should not be a problem, even after a few days post-op.
