Is Extended Redness and Bruising Normal After IPL?

My first session of IPL went great - my skin looked beautiful and no flushing events, except with wine. My second session the results were horrible. Instant bruising, extreme swelling, redness and hot skin. My doc, a specialist with this, did not like the bruises and reduced the level. Now, 8 days later, I have a rose hue to my skin, and dark red where bruises were. My doctor said that my skin is still healing due to the higher intensity of IPL. Is this normal or is my skin ruined?
