My chest is growing, not from bench pressing! Hoping one of the doctors can answer whether male breast enlargement is reversible or is plastic surgery the only answer.

A: See a physician to identify the cause of your gynecomastia

Edward S. Lee, MD

Gynecomastia can be due to several different causes. It can be transient in the young, due to medications, due to recreational drug use, or a hormonal imbalance. You should see a physician in order to be appropriately evaluated. If your gynecomastia is secondary to a medication side effect, then switching... more

A: First and Foremost, Get a good examination

Shahram Salemy, MD

While the majority of gynecomastia is an isolated issue, there are some cases in which gynecomastia is a sign of another underlying issue (testicular issues, hormone imbalance, or even side effects of medication or drugs). You need to first be checked out by either a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, or even a... more

A: Gynecomastia or Male Breast Enlargement

Michael Law, MD

Gynecomastia, or male breast enlargement, is an increasingly common reason that male patients schedule consultation in our practice. Gynecomastia may occur on one or both sides of the chest, may be localized primarily behind the nipple and areola or involve the entire pectoral area, and may arise in the teen... more

A: Please see your doctor for a check up

Richard P. Rand, MD

Males who notice breast enlargement that is not from exercise or weight gain should see their doctor for an evaluation. Certain medications, testicular problems, hormonal imbalances, and marijuana use can cause potentially reversible breast enlargement in men. True gynecomastia usually appears in early... more

A: Get a check-up with your doctor first

David Shafer, MD

Davis, Gynecomastia is more common that you would think. Sometimes a cause can be found such as a medication side-effect, drug (marijuana) side-effect, or a hormonal imbalance. You should go to your family physician to make sure that there is not a medical cause to your problem. After that however, the... more

A: need to be examined

Vladimir Grigoryants, MD

A patient with gynecomastia needs to have a detailed examination including review of any medications that the patient is taking. Gynecomastia that occurs during puberty or one that is related to medications can be reversible.

A: Exercise or plastic surgery for male breast reduction

John P. Di Saia, MD

Hello, Your answer really depends upon whether or not there is a reversible cause. Gynecomastia refers to the growth of glandular breast tissue. This is not fat or muscle. It is common with some medications and recreational drugs like marijuana. It can also be a relatively normal phase of development in some... more

A: usually only surgery is effective

David E. Berman, MD

Although there a multiple number of causes of gynecomastia, most of the time there is no known cause and surgery is required. if it is not too severe, ultrasonic liposuction or Smartlipo can work well- though both risk under-correcting. i have found surgery very effective. a very small incision through the... more

A: Surgery only

Vishal Kapoor, MD

Assuming you are not overweight and fit, sounds like you might have some glandular breast tissue, that will not respond to excercise / weight loss. Rather than repeat what Dr Berman has said (I like him, treat a fair amount of gynecomastia). I agree with him 100% - definitely take his advice.

A: Surgery for Gynecomastia

Raffy Karamanoukian, MD

Gynecomastia is a common diagnosis in men.  The incidence of gynecomastia peaks in three age groups; young children, adolescents, and seniors.  A thorough history and physical is important in the workup of gynecomastia.  Physicians look for physiologic causes of gynecomastia by performing a... more

After you have an evaluation to rule out medical causes (other than steroid imbalance) for gynecomastia, you have a choice other than surgery: laser lipolysis and skin tightening. I have treated several men with gynecomastia with CoolLipo by Cool Touch and the results are very good, and all without surgery.
