Does Pixel treat leg scars and keloids?

A: Minimally Effective

Arnold R. Oppenheim, MD

The Pixel which is a fractionated Erbium laser would not be effective for keloids. Lasers such as CO2 and pulsed dye, have been shown to be effective. If you have failed more conservative (and probably at least as effective) treatment such as steroid injections, cryotherapy, 5- FU, intralesional... more

A: Keloids: Treatment and Recurrence

Raffy Karamanoukian, MD

Keloids have a genetic component wherein the body does not recognize the endpoint or plateau phase of collagen deposition in wound healing. The optimal treatments remain keloid tissue compression and injection of corticosteroids intralesionally.

The Pixel can help soften and blend scars as well as keloids. The Pixel laser is a fractionated Erbium laser which means that it causes area of micro-injury as seen by small dots left on the treatment area. These tiny dots penetrate deep into the skin to remodel and generate new collagen and elastin. Scars are areas of inflammation. They can either appear darker or lighter, stretched out appearing or raised and may have a keloid to it. On the stretched out scars, the Pixel laser helps to tighten that area and softening the appearance of the scar. It will blend better into the skin. On scars that are darker, the Pixel helps break up the color around it so it will appear more like your normal skin color. On keloids, it helps decrease the Keloid area to flatten it. You will need multiple treatments spaced out about 4-6 weeks. I also recommend using Retin-A over your scars after you have healed from the Pixel to improve your results. The Pixel can not be done on any open scars or healing scars.

Spatel makes no sense!!!! If you are prone to keloids pixel ,fraxel ect are not going to help and may make it worse!!!!... Try the steroid injection... Basically everything Dr Oppenheim stated above...Pulsed dye and Co2 are the best options if all else fails in that order.... Try the aldara cream...A skin cancer cream that eats away abnormal tissue combined with a topical steroid cream applied to the affected area only.... Also Tazorac can be helpful it's effect isn't totally understood but it effects Keratin and over proliferation,,,
