Is There a Difference in the Scaring from a Avelar Vs Traditional Tummy Tuck?

From what I research here most doctors disaprove of the avelar and recommend the full tummy tuck. I'm curious if there really is any difference between the two in scaring? I don't have a lot of excess skin and would hate to have a huge scar. Thank you

Avelar Abdominoplasty is a different way of performing a Full Tummy Tuck

An excess in tummy skin is both VERTICAL and HORIZONTAL (or transverse). The extent od transverse skin excess and overhang over the groin determines just how far the incision has to go to remove it. If the skin excess is mostly vertical then it can be removed with a short transverse scar but the longer the overhang, the farther sideways the scar has to extend to smooth out the excess skin. An Avelar Tummy Tuck involves the same incision as a Full Tummy Tuck but involves less undermining... more

Improved scars for tummy tuck

There are two primary issues here: scar length and scar quality. Scar length is most directly a function of skin laxity. Scar quality depends on numerous factors; some controllable and others not. I am not aware of any study that has shown the scars from Avelar technique are a better quality scar.

Scarring Differences in Tummy Tuck

By far, the biggest determinant in how you scar is your individual skin type.  After that, careful technique, reducing "pull" or tension on the incision, and good aftercare all contribute to a finer scar.  There is no one tummy tuck technique that always results in a better scar.

Scars from the avelar tummy tuck

The length of the scar in a tummy tuck procedure is determined by the amount of skin laxity and how the excess must be tailored to blend in to the hip. True, with less laxity a mini tummy tuck will leave a shorter scar. The Avelar technique is one which changes the way the tissue is lifted in order to reduce the risk of fluid collections or a seroma. The scar is not any different from what we call a full tummy tuck. There are other methods to prevent the fluid and drains are very... more

Tummy Tuck Scar Length

A rose is a rose is a rose. Regardless of what you call it a tummy tuck is a tummy tuck. The length of the scar determines the amount of skin that can be removed. The Avelar technique combines liposuction with the tummy tuck to reduce the length of the scar. This is often done with the traditional tummy tuck too. The Avelar technique works best when the skin excess is at a minimum. For overly redundant skin even the Avelar technique has longer scar. When you see a plastic surgeon... more

Avelar Tummy Tucks

I don't do the Avelar tummy tuck personally, but the technique was not designed to reduce the length of an abdominoplasty scar. Scar length is dictated by the amount of skin laxity that you have. The Avelar abdominoplasty preserves a fascial layer beneath the abdominal flap closure. This maneuver is purported to help  prevent fluid collection (seroma) formation and allows more aggressive liposuction of the flap. A good plastic surgeon should be able to achieve a fine line scar... more
