Can Dental Work Interfere with Sculptra?

5 mos after a second SCulptra injection, I had a dental bridge. Within 2 days I noticed large nodules inside my cheeks and have since experienced constant excessive saliva. Biopsy showed nodules being chronic sialadentitis and incipient mucus escape reaction. Constant excessive saliva is driving me insane. Plan to have nodules excised and want to remove bridge but concerned more issues may occur. thank you for any and all I put.

Dental Work and Sculptra

Hi Joanie, We have not heard of a reaction such as yours. It is best to consult with both your Sculptra injecting physician as well as your dentist. Good luck and be well. Dr. P

I'm dealing with the same thing! I've been going through a lot of dental work and in the middle I got injections of sculptra. I was at the dentist office for another round of work 2 days after the sculptra. Right after that I developed large lumps in my cheeks. I dont have excessive saliva. My plastic surgeon injected saline and I thought it helped but quickly things have turned chronic. My face swelled really badly. My doc sent me to see and ENT and he put me on Prednisone. The swelling... And the lumps went right down. When I was on the high dose I was getting better but as soon as the dose tapered down, the swelling has come back. I spoke with a PA who does a fair amount of Sculptra and she asked if I had dental work. She said she attended a seminar where dermatologists found that dental work can over stimulate the immune system and in conjunction cause the lumps and inflammatory response. She said it's recommended to go on at least 2 months of a broad spectrum antibiotic. The ENT wants me to be on Prednisone for a week and then talk about antibiotics. This is a very mad situation for me. The swelling and inflammation is bad. I never had any health problems nor did I have any problems with the last 2 times I had Sculptra last year. If dental work can cause this terrible inflammatory response doctors need to be aware of it.

I continue to have lumps and excessive saliva after 10 mos on doxycycline, 5 Kenalog 10 injections and attempts at excising the lumps. And now I have to have another major dental procedure (tooth extraction and dental implant). I am terrified. I absolutely agree that the connection between Scultra and dental work must be explored. Neither my plastic surgeon nor my dentist will admit their work is responsible for my problems. Please let me know if you find any solution and I will certainly let you know if I find any help.

Thank you for replying. It's a scary situation. I have to get the final crowns put on in a few weeks and then I'll be done for a while but dental work always comes up so what's in store for the future? It seems that you've done everything you can to remove the Sculptra thereby removing the cause of the immune response yet you're still having a problem. If doctors are not warned of the dangers they won't be responsible. If we do not speak up and tell the medical community, they won't know. My doctors are saying the same thing. Dentist says he doesnt think the dental work had anything to do with my response but then again, he never even heard of Sculptra. My ENT didnt want to put me on antibiotics until I had a week on Prednisone. My plastic surgeon is beside himself trying to help figure out how to relieve the situation. It's hard to believe that through all of the use of Sculptra, the link between dental work and an immune response has not been clearly established and the info hasn't been distributed to doctors. Praying I will at least get to a stable point soon. I very very much hope you get better too.

I have read that injections of Kenalog 10 with FU5 (off label use) has been used successful but my plastic surgeon is very conservative (which is why I choose him) and does not want to go there. I just don't know what to do.
