A Retainer Before Braces Doesn't Make Much Sense
If you are going to be moving teeth with brace there isn't really a reason to have a retainer first.
However, if your teeth or gums are being traumatized or were recently traumatized a retainer might be helpful in stabilizing them before braces. This is really the only reason I can come up with.
