I had hyperthyroidism(corrected 5yrs back, stable now)&it left me with protruding eyes. They used to be slit-like(ugly also). As u can see below,I appear to be staring constandly&have difficulty closing my eyes.I sleep with them partially open&hence suffer from dry eyes. Many doctors i'm consulted hv refused orbital decompression surgery as my case is not serious enough to risk my vision. Are there any other surgical options enhance my other features to play up my bigger eyes(like the model)?

It is possible to make the eyelids look better

It is possible to make the eyelids look better. Often, a recession of the upper eyelid to lower it makes the eyes look less prominent. And, sometimes lifting the lower lid can make it look less prominent. Orbital compression is usually the last option because it’s a very invasive surgery and can cause double vision and other problems. Usually, we try to treat with eyelid surgery when possible.

Protruding eyes after hyperthyroidism

Your situation is probably best treated in a university setting with a joint procedure an oculoplastic surgeon and a craniofacial plastic surgeon. The eye socket can be expanded to accommodate the globe so that it will rest a little deeper in the socket. The expansion is done by either moving the outer half of the bone more outward (lateral expansion) or by moving the deep inner socket further inward.

There is a role for cosmetic orbital decompression.

You might consider seeing Dr. Kelvin Chong in the Department of Opthalmology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He specialized in treating thyroid eye disease. While it is like not possible for you to look the model at the end, appropriate surgical reconstruction is likely to make an important difference for you.
