cosmetic dentistry in a patient with congenital heart defect. Is the risk too great? I have a friend with very ugly teeth. He wants cosmetic dentistry but was told he is unable to have any work done on his teeth, including routine cleaning because of risk of heart infection which he says could kill him. As a young child he had a septal defect repaired and an artificial valve put in.

Heart Valve Defects and Dentistry
The American Heart Association addresses these issues every year. Your friend should be able to have any dentistry performed with the proper antibiotic prescribed before treatment.
