I have a consultation coming soon, so me and some friends were chatting about breast implants. One of the girls said hers hurt worse than childbirth?? I found this to be a little extreme but hers are big. So my question in if I am getting considerably smaller, subtle implants, would I be in less pain as opposed to getting something bigger? I've already decided on smaller implants for other reason, was just wondering if this would be an added benefit of a small implant.

Correlation between size of breast implant and the level of pain

In researching the internet medical literature a few studies done over the years have shown no statistical significance in pain levels vs implant size. Great question. The real factors in the subjective effect of pain is personal, locale placement of the implant. From MIAMI DR. B

Pain with breast implant augmentation: under vs over is more relavant than volume.

One of the most signficant factors in pain levels following breast augmentation is the "under the muscle" location. I find that this is a more critical issue than the size unless we are discussing extremes of volume. In most instances, many of my patients, who have had children and nursed, compare the pain of breast augmentation to the pain first experienced when their breasts became engorged with milk during lactation.

Small implants vs. pain?

Pain is variable. It is different from patient to patient. I do not know of any studies suggesting that an increased breast implant size causes more pain.

Pain is manageable with breast implant surgery

There are important issues to consider related to implant size, but pain isn't one of the big ones. While it may be true that there would be more discomfort from stretching tight muscle and skin for someone going large, there are effective strategies for dealing with it such as an On-Q pump that slowly infuses numbing solution into the area. Choose the size you will be happy with long-term.

Breast Augmentation is NOT nearly as Painful as Childbirth

A Breast Augmentation post-operative pain is not anywhere close to that of childbirth. This is a clear exaggeration. But it is true that very large breast implants are associated with more discomfort than small breast implants. This is especially true when placed in young women who never had children and who therefore have a tighter skin envelope.
