How Common Are Hernias After Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Does having gastric bypass place me at greater risk of developing a hernia? What precautions should be taken to reduce this risk?

Hernias after gastric bypass

Incisional hernias are very uncommon after laparoscopic gastric bypass but very common after open gastric bypass surgery. This is why all gastric bypass surgeries should be performed laparoscopically. To reduce the risk of hernias it is recommended to do no heavy lifting for 6 weeks after gastric bypass surgery.
