My orthodontist told me today that he will probably take my braces off next time I go, my teeth are all perfect all but a gap I have by my canine tooth in the top and the same on the other side (this one is almost closed.) Why is my orthodontist going to take them off when I still have these spaces? Will he use retainers to close them?

From the photo you provided, it does not look like you need any type of surgery. I would recommend braces or invisalign treatment to align your teeth and correct slight overbite
Take a close look...is there room in the dental arch for this tooth? If not then there is no chance that the tooth will get any better! One of the major problems in orthodontics is to find room to align the teeth...enough room and it is easy to straighten the teeth...not enough room...
