I need to have a chin revision done and this one doctor said that he will have a molding of my chin for the chin implant plus the changes we want to make. I never heard of this. He stated because usually the other implants don't fit perfectly on people. Does anyone know about this or exactly how it works? Can someone recommend what should be used to avoid making mistakes and having my chin look unnatural.

Chin molding not necessary for chin augmentation

There is no need for molding on the chin unless there is a very large soft tissue defect from trauma or cancer. Three dimensional computer imaging can be done to customize an implant for this. We use the Implantech brand of chin implants. They come in different sizes and can be custom carved according to the patient’s needs, wants, and desires. Mold of chin

The mold on top of the skin is wothless, because it does not represent the boney anatomy. for facial bone defects a 3D MRI is taken and the defect is visualized in 3D then an implant is computer fabricated. For the chin implant find a BOARD CERTIFIED PS and get another opinion. I have had companies make cusome implants like Buttock implants and Pec implants and Caf implants

Custom made chin implants

Dear Sharpie, I believe that your doctor is referring to a custom made chin implant. A model of your skull is made and a template can be molded to the desired shape and size and then a costomized implant is ordered. It is a realy great way of improving the contour and shape of the mandible, but it is very expensive and time consuming. Luckily, this is not needed in the majority of patients desiring a chin augmentation. Good luck. Dr. A. Gantous
