Mommy makeover

A mommy makeover, which involves a cosmetic breast and abdominal procedure requires general anesthesia. Patients can experience temporary hair loss from general anesthesia or the stress of surgery. I have not seen this with patients however I do know that it can occur. Consult with a board certified plastic surgeon and anesthesiologist if you have specific concerns about the anesthesia and medications used and hair loss. Best wishes, Dr.Bruno

You should make sure that you are eating well and getting a balanced diet. You might consider taking some vitamins and fish oil to help prior to... more

Any stress, including surgery (or even anesthesia without surgery), can cause hair loss in rare cases. Medications, anesthetic gases, antibiotics, or other routine parts of surgery (elective or otherwise) can also rarely cause hair loss. The problem is determining cause and effect. You already know your hair is "fragile and has a tendency to fall... more

The "chemical substances" used by anesthesiologists and surgeons will very depending on the different practices of the physicians and the needs of the individual patients. For specific answers you will need to address the question with the surgeon and anesthesiologist involved with your care. Also keep in mind that there may be other reasons (such as stress around the time of surgery) the may be involved with loss of hair. Best wishes.
