Chemical Peels Suitable For All Skin Types

Yes, African American women can get chemical peels. Chemical peels are superficial peels suitable for all skin tones and complexions. Chemical peels use a unique blend of safe but effective acids to cause chemical exfoliation of the epidermis, or outer layer of the skin. Skin regeneration following this chemical peel results in a fresh, organized, healthy epidermis. The result is a smoother and more even complexion and an improvement in pigment changes. If done correctly and by a certified technician, there should be no issue.

Chemical Peeling in Patients With Darker Skin Types

+1

When done correctly by a well-trained board-certified dermatologist (or under his or her supervision), chemical peeling is safe and effective in darker skin types. It is important that the correct peel and strength be done based on the skin type and condition being targeted, with the goal of minimizing side effects. Also helpful in conjunction with chemical peels are topical skin lightening agents such as topical tretinoin and hydroquinone. Avoiding the sun is essential after chemical peels and for maintaining your results.

Chemical Peels in Patients with Dark Skin

+1

Chemical peels are safe in African American patients. There is a risk of dark spots occuring in patients with darker skin tones after a chemical peel or laser procedure. It is important to speak to your dermatologist about the right type of peel for you and your skin, and the type of peel that would minimize any adverse effects. Dermatologists will also sometimes pre-treat patients with darker complexions with lightening agents, to help minimize the risk of dark spots.

African American Patients and Chemical Peels

Yes, African American patients (as well as others with darker skin types) can safely get several types of chemical peels. However, due to the potential for darker skin types to occasionally develop pigmentary irregularities (for example, "post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation") following chemical and laser treatments, extra care must be taken when choosing which type as well as strength of chemical peel to use to avoid these possible side effects. Thus, choosing a board-certified dermatologist with training in cosmetic procedures, as well as experience in treating darker skin types is key. Good luck to you and I hope you enjoy the results of your peel! :)
