Do Cartilage (Helix) Piercings Ever Close?

If I have a cartilage piercing that I want to let close, will it? I've been told that helix piercings shrink but never close. I've been told they shrink to the point where you can no longer insert an earing, so that for all intents and purposes, it -is- closed. I don't plan on stretching the earring any, just a normal stud, but will it leave a noticeable hole if I choose to remove it? Or will it appear like like the regular piercings I have on the lobes of my ears (that is, pinprick tiny)?
