Chin liposuction for double chin fat?

Why doesn't diet and exercise work to get rid of a double chin?  I'm only 27 and I can't remember when I first noticed the collection of fat under my chin.  My diet is strict and I exercise all the time, but nothing changes. Is chin liposuction the only or best way to get rid of the double chin?

A: Chin Liposuction and Neck Fat

Raffy Karamanoukian, MD

Chin liposuction will improve excess fat pockets in the chin, neck, and jowls. These fat collections are often not metabolized easily with diet and exercise and thus rarely improve with mere weightloss.

Liposuction of the chin (submental area) in a young patient can result in a very good contour. If this is a localized collection of fat that is not responsive to diet and exercise, then liposuction may be the best option for you. Liposuction of the area beneath the chin in the anterior neck works very well especially in younger patients. Recently I have started using Slim Lipo laser assisted liposuction and the results are even more spectacular because of the additional tightening of the skin.

Liposuction removes fat.  If that is the primary problem in a young patient, it is a very successful procedure. Gregory Turowski, MD, PhD

The fat under the chin is a common problem for many patients at any age. Liposuction is a simple and quick solution to remove an excess fat tissue. The procedure can be done under local anesthesia. One word of caution: skin has to have enough elasticity; otherwise, skin lift has to be included.

A: Liposuction can be effective for under chin

Steven Wallach, MD

Liposuction under the chin can be very successful to treat this problem area. Sometimes, like you stated, all the working out just won't get rid of it.

Liposuction for under the chin and neck area works well.  There is usually a significant improvement of the neck and jawline with improvement in the angle between the neck and under chin area. I usually require the patients to wear a neck band for 2 weeks which helps reduce the swelling and redrape the... more
