Is a C-section Scar Indicative of a Tummy Tuck Scar?

My c-section scar healed beautifully. The scar is paper thin, very low, and totally white. Pretty much invisible after 2 years. Since I healed well in regard to that scar, will my tummy tuck scar be the same way?

C section vs. tummy tuck scar

This is a common question.  Scar appearance is influenced by the amount of tension on the incision.  A c-section scar does not have much tension on it due to the skin being stretched out from pregnancy.  A tummy tuck scar will be under tension.  That is not to say that a tummy tuck scar cannot look just as good as your c-section scar, it is just not an indicator that one will heal like the other.

Forming nice scars is a good predictor, but...these are not at all similar except in location.

A major factor is scar quality is absence of tension, which is almost always the case in c-sections, and most operations on the abdomen except tummy tucks.

In a TT, as much excess skin is excised as is possible, and there is a balance between getting enough out, and having too much tension.

Most TT scars will eventually be thin and white, but it can take a lot longer than it did for the c-section scar. .

All the best.

Does C-section scar indicate tummy tuck scar will be the same?

Though we like to think its a sign, there is no guarantee you will have the same quality scar.  Tummy tucks produce more tension on your wound and tension is what makes scars bad.  Scars will fade with time but you cannot assume a c-section scar will indicate what your tummy tuck scar will be like.

A good C-section scar indicates the capacity for good healing.  There are a number of technical factors that can improve the quality of the scar when a tummy tuck is performed.  Find a plastic surgeon with ELITE credentials who performs HUNDREDS of tummy tucks each year.  Look at the surgeon's website before and after photos to determine who will get you to your goals.  Kenneth Hughes, MD Los Angeles, CA

Tummy Tuck Scar Similar to C-section Scar?

+1

The fact that your C-section scar has healed nicely may be a very positive sign; however, remember that  the we are talking about 2 very different operations with potentially significantly more tension potentially on the incision line associated with tummy tuck surgery as compared to C-section surgery. Remember, that despite best efforts and the presence of a well-healed C-section scar, revisionary scar surgery may be necessary/beneficial.

 Best wishes.

Scarring after tummy tuck

+1

The fact that your c-section scar healed nicely suggests that you have good potential for excellent healing after your tummy tuck, although this is not a certainty. There is more tension on a tummy tuck scar immediately after the surgery than after the c-section, which can adversely affect the scar appearance. Overall, however, most tummy tuck scars become quite inconspicuous after a year or two.
