Breast Reduction on a 15-year-old?

I'm fifteen years old, and curently on the big end of a 34DD. im a dancer, runner, and i play soccer. they are so uncovient and i get horrible back pains. Im sick of getting called "tits" or "jugs" and every time i hear a comment about how big my boobs are, i feel horrible about myself. Im having trouble finding a doctor who would perform the surgery on a 15 year old. Do i fit the qualifications? and which is better, breast reduction by surgury or liposuction?

Breast Reduction for Teenager?

Thank you for the question. It sounds like you are dealing with juvenile breast hypertrophy along with the physical and psychosocial consequences of this diagnosis. In other words, the breasts are too large for the frame causing both physical and psychological distress. As you think about breast reduction surgery make sure you do your homework and understand the potential risks and complications associated with the procedure. Unsatisfactory... more

15 year old and breast reduction

First you would need your parent's consent. But if you are of adult height and you are not growing anymore and having regular menses, it is certainly reasonable to offer surgery if you are an appropriate candidate.

Breast reduction by resection or liposuction in 15 year old

You are on the younger side for a reduction mammoplasty and should first discuss the procedure with your parents (who must provide consent) and your pediatrician to determine if you have reached your adult size. As to your candidacy for resection versus liposuction, you should meet with a plastic surgeon to discuss your options after a history and physical examination.

Breast reduction can be done after breasts stop growing.

Hi. 1)  I know how distressing this is.  If your breasts have not grown for one year, I would recommend breast reduction now. The quality of life -- particularly in young women -- is dramatically improved by this operation when it is well done. 2)  Occasionally we will do a breast reduction in a girl whose breasts are still growing, because she is in severe emotional pain.  But she and her parents need to understand that she may need another procedure... more

You need family support

With the support of your family, and if your breasts have stopped growing, then you should be a candidate for a breast reduction. The only fear doctors have is that you will continue to grow and will need another procedure at another time. Usually at y our age, a regular reduction is the surgery of choice. Liposuction usually does not work as your breasts are very glandular. If you are grossly overweight then diet and exercise is the way to go.

Breast Reduction in Young Patient

Yes, it is possible to perform a breast reduction in a younger patient.  It sounds from your description that you meet many of the criteria - back pain, interference with sports and activities, and psychological distress.  Your best option would be to come in for a consultation with you and your parents to discuss the surgery details and for a physical examination.  Good luck.

Teenagers can be good candidates for breast reduction

Hi Sarah12033.  In some cases breast reduction is appropriate for teenagers.  It depends on your emotional maturity, your parents opinion as they must give consent, the ability to understand that you may need a repeat surgery if your breasts continue to enlarge.  If the patient is experiencing severe symptoms, it is sometimes OK to proceed as long as both the patient and the parents understand the limitiations and benefits of the surgery.  Breast reduction by surgery... more
