Much of this has been taken from an article I submitted to realself and is reproduced here for your convenience: There has been much talk about the Brazilain Butt lift. Hi Key, Brazilian Butt Lift, Fat injection to buttocks, fat transfer to buttocks, autologous fat grafting to buttocks are just some of the common terms that refer to the same procedure that involves using a person's own fat cells from other part of the body to enhance volume, shape and also correct contour irregularity of the buttocks. The procedure typically involves three steps: Harvesting via various liposuction techniques (except Smart Lipo or other laser lipo because the heat generated from the laser usually causes permanent damage to the the fat cells) Purifying to separate the usable fat cells from the non-usable ones, blood and fluid Injection using a set of instruments specifically designed to properly place the purified fat cells into various location and depth of the buttocks. Volume: patient's body mass index (BMI) usually gives me some idea how much fat is available for harvesting. Once determined how much fat is available, I then discuss with the patient regarding aesthetic desire and establish realistic expectations based on their body proportion ratio, their spine angle and soft tissue elasticity, etc. Shape and Contour: this aspect is the main difference between buttock augmentation using implant versus fat. Generally speaking, buttock implant is limited in the shapes available and the location of placement. Fat grafting, on the other hand, is much more versatile in correcting and creating the desired shape and contour. For example, one of the most common areas that a patient wants improved is the outer portion of the buttocks. Although it can be done with the implants, the result with fat grafting is much more natural, softer and has no risk of implant migration. Another example would be adding fat to the upper portion of the buttock to enhance the lower back-upper buttock transition for patient who has less than favorable lumbar-sacral spine angle, therefore creating a more lifted appearance. Bottom line: when it is done properly on an appropriate patient, Brazilian butt lift is an effective technique to restore and enhance the buttock volume and shape.
