Can Botox Be Damaged by Massage?

i received botox in my forehead about 5 days ago for the very first time. today i was getting a manicure, and the manicurist took it upon herself to give me a quick massage - including my forehead. strange and annoying . . . now i'm paranoid that she could have screwed up my botox. is there any risk? will it lessen the effectiveness?

Botox and massage after 5 days

A forehead massage 5 days after receiving Botox injections would have no effect on the effectiveness of your treatment.

Botox and massage

Five days is rather late for a massage to cause botox to migrate or dislodge.   However, its not impossible.  I would avoid vigorous massages in any area that has had botox teatment for at least the first couple of weeks.

Massaging areas that have been injected with Botulinum toxin (Dysport and Botox)

Massage 5 days after the injections should not have an effect on the distribution of the botulinum toxin results. This is only of concern in the immediate post-injection period.

BOTOX® is mostly taken up or washed away in the first hour or two after treatment

BOTOX® [and other fomulations of BTX-A, for example Dysport®] are mostly absorbed by nerve ending on the treated tissues [muscles or sweat glands] within the first hour or two after treatment. Just about all of the BOTOX® that is not taken up during that time is washed away by the natural circulation in the treated area. BOTTOM LINE: when I get treated with BOTOX®, I am careful not to rub the treated area for ONE HOUR after treatment, so that I do not move the... more

BOTOX can’t be damaged by massage

BOTOX can’t be damaged by massage. I do advise that you don’t massage or manipulate your face for many hours. If the BOTOX is very dilute (meaning it is mixed with a lot of water), it is possible it could migrate. But 5 days later, the BOTOX has been absorbed. So, any issues you see are probably just a result of the treatment.

5 days post Botox

Five days after Botox injection you need not be concerned about the effect of the facial massage.  The day you have you Botox done no massaging of the area should be done including facials and microdermabrasion.

Will Botox be Affected by Facial Massage?

Hi 98104.  The after care instructions we give for Botox injections to not go past the first day, so anything that happens on the 5th day after Botox injections should not affect your results.

Botox spread after injection.

When we inject Botox into the tissue it has an area of diffusion from the injected site of about 2cm during the first few hours after injection. Hence, we instruct our patients not to massage the area where injections have been placed. After five days you should have nothing to worry about as all the Botox has been taken up in the nerve endings and is no longer available to spread.

Ruin Botox by facial massage 5 days after treatment? Unlikely.

Seattle, Do not fret. I'm sure your Botox treatment will not be messed up by a facial massage given 5 days after your injections. In fact, that sounds like a nice side perk to your manicure! Remember that Botox takes about 2 weeks to fully kick in, so any increasing heaviness or sensation you might notice after the massage is really more likely to be just from the original Botox itself getting more active, than from a problem related to the massage. That said, do not hesitate... more

Botox and Massage

No, I think you will be fine...I have my patients who receive Botox, exercise the muscles I treat (the glabellar or "11" lines, the forehead, the crow's feet, etc.) fairly aggressively for the first 2 hours after the treatment. It is this initial couple of hours that the neurotoxin is incorporated into the nerve and moving the muscle maximizes the absorbance. I think 5 days after your injection, the dye has been cast. Good luck! Dr. C johnconnorsmd.com more

Botox Damaged by Message?

After five days you should be OK.  I instruct my patients not to message the area, not to wear tight hats, and not to put their face in the round cradle when getting a back message for a day or two.  In your case the medicine should be taking effect and the risk of spread is low.

Massage after Botox

I tell my patients not to touch their Botox treatment areas for about 6 hours after treatment.  After that, there should be no harm in having massage done, especially 5 days after treatment.

Massage after Botox

The whole point of why your provider tells you not to massage or rub the area after your treatment is to ensure that the Botox stays where he or she places it and it is not massaged or rubbed in a way to allow it to migrate to a different area and affecting other muscles.  However within hours after the treatment, the Botox has been taken within the nerve fibers and migration is no longer a major concern.  Getting a massage the next day or after should not be an issue. I hope... more

Botox - massage

Don't worry!  Your manicurist didn't do anything to hurt your BOTOX.  Usually I recommend no exercise or massage for the treated areas for the first few hours after injection - this prevents the product from diffusing into surrounding areas.  However, after 5 days, all the product is already bound and incorporated at the neuromuscular junction so there is nothing to worry about.  However - I agree with you - I would also think it was strange if my manicurist... more

Massage after Botox

Initially after botox treatment it is recommended not to get a massage or perform exertion.  Now this is for the first few hours after the procedure.  At 5 days you should be OK.

Massage and Botox

5 days after your injection, there is very little risk of any untoward consequences from a massage. I advise patients to avoid manipulation of the injected area for 12-24 hours after injection. After this time frame, the risks of spreading the Botox are minimal.

Botox and massage

Massage 5 days after Botox will not do any harm. Massage within 24 hours after the injection should not be done because it can spread the Botox somewhere unintended.

Not to worry, your massage five days after Botox did not affect your result

After a full day, the botox injections should have taken hold and no massage thereafter can affect its performance.

Massage 5d after Botox

There is likely no harm in the sponaneous manicurist masage to forehead 5days after your forehead Botox. Your injecting physician put the neurotoxin where it needs to be and it should stay in the muscles, esp 5 days after injection. No matter how vigorous the massage.

Botox/Dysport and Forehead Massage.

Massage to the forehead, immediately after receiving Botox or Dysport, should only be done by the doctor administering the medication. The risk is that the neurotoxin can be moved outside the are where the effect is desired. For the forehead, the most common undesirable displacement is down to the eyelids. Even correctly placed Botox/Dysport can exacerbate brow drooping and heavy upper eyelids. The risk is allowing the Botox/Dysport to hinder the eyelid muscle. This results in the... more

Can Botox be damaged by massage?

By five days post injection most if not all the Botox is bound in the neuromuscular junction.  The possibility that it will be displaced or diminished in action is exceedingly small. I recommend no reclining or touching the area the first 3-4 hours after injection.  It's been much longer than that after your injection.
