Hi. This description is taken directly from the American Board of Orthodontics website.  "An orthodontist is a dentist who has completed an American Dental Association accredited graduate program in the specialty of orthodontics. Board certified means additional training in tooth movement..

I believe all Orthodontists are board certified. Some like to flower up their resumes and websites by stating the obvious about their credentials. Im a board certified general dentist also but I dont put that in my title. I do orthodontics in my practice every day but im not board certified in that field, so I cant call myself an orthodontist...hope this helps..

Dental Specialties have their own Boards

Each specialty in dentistry (ortho, periodontics, endodontics, oral surgery) has it's own board of officials who preside over them.  After dental school, a specialist completes training in their area of interest and upon completion, takes a Board Exam to become certified.  General dentists may also complete lots of additional training and learn to do any procedure a specialist might do.  As long as they do it as well as a specialist would do it they are within their... more

Dental specialties are certified

While all dentists must pass board exams, this is only the first level of boards.  General dentists can perform any dental procedure, they are held to the standard of care of the specialist in that discipline.  What this means is that if a dentist does a root canal, they must do as well as a specialist (an endodontist).
