Treatment for sunken and hollow eyes?

I have a sunken eyes with a shortage of upper eyelid fat. It's genetic and that's what gives me a tired and elderly look. What is the best treatment for this? A fat grafting surgery? Or a fat injection? Pease help. I'm a 28 year old (female) and my problem isn't the extra upper eyelid fat as most people had but the opposite, a shortage of an upper eyelid fat.

A: Open fat grafting is the best correction for hollow eyes

Brooke R. Seckel, MD

Dear Shaha, I am sure many doctors will suggest fat injection or filler injection to correct your hollow eyes. I strongly urge you not to have injections done into your upper eyelid. There are many very delicate structures in the upper eyelid which can be injured by a needle used for injection, and injury to... more

A: Fat grafting is excellent for sunken eyes

Robert M. Jensen, MD

This is one of the areas that fat grafting really shines. Fat harvested from another part of your body and then reinjected along the upper orbital rim can have very dramatic results.  It is usually permanent and has a very high satisfaction rate. If you're not sure, try some Restylane first, it's... more

A: Filling the Upper Eyelid Sulcus

Daniel Reichner, MD

Shaha, Based on your age and depth of the upper lid sulcus, I would recommend a very small amount of hyaluronic acid filler. This injection has to be placed very carefully by a trained plastic surgeon. It has been my experience that hyaluronic acid fillers in this location can last 12 to 18... more

A: Fat Grafting

David Shafer, MD

Shaha, Fat Grafting is likely the best option for you. The synthetic products are also a possibility, however, I feel you will get the most natural result with your own fat. Just make sure you go to someone with extensive experience with fat grafting. Good luck

A: Sunken appearing lids

Farzad R Nahai, MD

Thank you for the question.  I will refer to the photo you provided. In general, fullness around the eyelids is youthful.  Two minimally invasive ways to improve fullness around the eyes are fillers or fat injections. Fillers (non-permanent types) can be a safe way to "test the waters", so... more

A: Sunken eyes requires a special approach

Peter Malouf, DO

Fat autografting this close to the eye has been associated with blindness and is highly technique dependent. I would highly recccomend someone who is highly skilled and experienced with either FAMI (fat autograft muscle injection) or the Sid Coleman technique.  In terms of other dermal fillers, I... more

A: Fat Grafting for the Upper Lid

Michael Law, MD

I regularly perform structural fat grafting to uppper lid hollows and have been doing so for several years. I have been pleased with the results as have my patients. Hollow upper eyelids are agining. I treat people who genetically have hollow upper eyelids, people who experience hollowing as part of the againg... more

A: Fat injections or fat grafting can be performed for sunken and hollow eyes

William Portuese, MD

Fat injections or fat grafting can be performed for sunken and hollow eyes. However, it has to be done in the appropriate fashion so that it does not give the appearance of a lumpiness in the orbital area. It also has to be placed deep into the eyelid area so as not to be seen as lumpiness.

A: Fat grafting for sunken eyes

Hisham Seify, MD, PhD

Hello shaha. Deep, skeletonised upper eye lids will give you a tired look and could also give an impression of aging. The only option avaialble is to use fat transfer to be able to fill the upper eye lids. Other fillers could be used as well (hyaluronic acide based). This is a very technical procedure and it... more

Based on the picture you have upper eyelid ptosis. This is a congenital condition. If you get a eye examination by a opthomologist you will have a visual field defect and usually these patient have a hard time seeing at night. You will need a ptosis repair and possible fat grafting.

I have hollowness of upper eyelids from aggressive bleth (3 years) ago. I also have been told that I have shortage of skin in the left upper eyelid. What is the danger or having fat grafting by injection done to the upper eyelid that has the shortage of skin?
