I am 29 and now contemplating getting a breast lift with implants. However I have health issues I suffer with Lupus (SLE) and I still have the c-section scar that was done 4 years ago. I am unsure if it is keloid or another type but it's raised, red and bumpy. I am scared this will happen to my breasts as well but something needs to be done as my right breast is predominately bigger than my left and fitting into bras properly is impossible. Am I at more risk of infection?

Breast Lift and Scarring?

Thank you for the question. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing exactly how you will heal after breast surgery. There is no direct correlation with how the C-section scar healed. Breast lift procedures improve breast shape

Your breast lift scars will vary based on technique, surgeon, your own healing biology and then tension placed on scars by the presence of an implant. In my experience, peri-areolar scars heal with more scar thickening and potential for hypertrophy than vertical (lollipop) scars, which distribute wound tension over a larger region.

It varies....

Hello, Some people with Lupus can have problems with wound healing, especially if they have "vasculitis" in the skin. Scarring after breast lift with implants varies with technique and patient factors. You need to be carefully evaluated particularly if you are on anti-Lupus medications as they can also impair wound healing. Best Regards, John Di Saia MD

Breast lift

You should not be at a higher risk of infection with SLE alone. Your c-section scar may be an indicator of how you will heal from a breast lift. In patients who do tend to scar poorly, I recommend post-op silicone sheeting to lessen scarring
