Breast Asymmetry Due to Mondor's Cords?

asked 3 years ago by ac5440 in Tampa, FL

Question viewed 655 times

I had breast augmentation on March 12, with 260cc Silicone implants. On the day of surgery, I went to the doctor for possible infection. Left breast was pinkish, more painful and swollen; he put me on Cipro for 7 days. During weeks 1-2, I was told to massage the right breast only. I developed Mondor's Cords 2 weeks after surgery in the left, and about 3 weeks after surgery in the right. Right implant has "dropped", but fuller on the bottom. My left still hasn't "dropped". At week 3 visit, doctor said Mondor’s Cords is possibly keeping the skin tighter. Should I be worried?

May be due to the slight infection

The slight infection you had in the left breast may be the cause-- you might be developing a slight contracture or tightening of the tissues around the implant, as this is your body's natural reaction to infection. I think time and massage should do the trick, but it's possible you would need a revision procedure in the future. I would be patient, and not agree to any type of surgical intervention for a few months, but talk with your surgeon first about what his plans will be for your... more

Mondor's bands don't cause asymmetry

Your implants have not fully settled so don't give up hope yet but don't blame the Mondor's bands as they are not the cause of the asymmetry.  Massage, follow your surgeon's advice and give it 3-4 months.  If no improvement occurs, you may need a revision.

Mondor's cords do not cause breast asymmetry.

Hi. Unfortunately, you have an asymmetrical result. Since a month has passed, this is probably permanent. I cannot be sure as to the cause, but you may need a revision. Of course, don't do anything for 6 months, just in case things do improve on their own. But massage will not help I am sorry, because I know this is not what you wanted to hear.

I agree

Interestingly, Mondor's not that common, is usually mild, but can be prnounced. Stil, I would not bet on that as the cause of your asymmetry. You may be experiencing natural asymmetry that develops transiently during healing, in which case, massage may help. On the other hand, you may be developing a contracture, as the others have said. I would recommend that you have a frank discussion with your doctor and see if there are things you can do to correct the situation without surgery, or... more

Not sure that Mondor's is the cause

Hello Mondor's is not that uncommon, especially after inframammary incisions. Usually it resolves without any problems. It may be that the slight infection and the lack of massage has caused the left implant to lag behind the opposite side. You are less than one month from surgery, so follow your doctor's instructions closely, keep him/her advised of any questions and give it another 6 weeks or so. Best of luck.

Mondors disease after breast augmentation should not affect symmetry of the implants

Mondors disease is usually self limiting and should not affect implant position. If there was healing difficulty on the left side, capsular contraction may be starting on the left and preventing the left implant from dropping. Get in to see your surgeon to address this now. Massage and displacement exercises can help encourage the left implant to drop and help prevent capsules. Ask your doctor if you should take Ibuprofin which some people nbelieve can help prevent capsular contracture.... more

Not yet

Hi there- I'm not sure the Mondor's is actually causing your problem, but in any case the Mondor's should take care of itself with a bit of time.. With regard to the asymmetry in your breast outcome, I would say that at three weeks it would be uncommon, but not unheard of, for an implant on one side to still look a bit higher than the other. I would follow your surgeon's advice very carefully and conscientiously, and keep all of your appointments. In another 2-3 weeks, if no improvement has... more
