Patient Satisfaction with Rhinoplasty

Ethnicity is not the most important factor in patient satisfaction. The most important step in ensuring patient satisfaction is to have a thorough consultation process so a patient can fully understand the options and expected outcome. If patient expectations are reasonable and properly set by the surgeon, then patient happiness can almost always be achieved. see video

Unhappy patient

I think to avoid an unhappy patient, things sholdl be discussed very carefully in consultation and expectations both realistic and unrealistic should be discussed to avoid misconceptions of surgery. Once this has been performed, I think patients become more realistic with expectations and if they go ahead with surgery, are usually happy with the results.

Rhinoplasty Expectations and Asian Patients

Hello, You have asked a very interesting question. Following rhinoplasty, Asian, Caucasian, African American, Middle Eastern, ethnicity really doesn’t predict postoperative satisfaction. Paramount are preoperative patient expectations and surgeon expertise. The most important factor leading to postoperative success is having specific concerns about the shape and contour of your nose. Is the bridge of your nose too flat, is the nasal tip too... more

How Often Are Asian Patients Unhappy with Rhinoplasty?

The ones that contact us and come in for consultation are 100% unhappy. Most often this is related to the use of an L-shaped silastic dorsal implant that is too stiff and hard for the nasal tip skin and will eventually erode IMO. This type of Rhinoplasty seems common in Asians, especially when the Rhinoplasty is performed outside the US. This requires a Revision Rhinoplasty to modified or replace the original implant with a straight silastic dorsal implant, the... more

Types of difficulties in Asian rhinoplasty

1. Inadequate tip projection or graft visibility. The tip cartilages are soft and need to be reinforced with additional cartilage. If not done adequately, the tip remains weak and soft. If the reinforcing cartilages are added to vigorously, then they become visible through the skin. 2. bridge too high/ not high enough. Bridge material becomes infected, shifts, shrinks. In addition to having the proper height, use of synthetic materials can cause problems. Using your own tissues are best... more

Rhinoplasty Expectations Among Asians

Certainly the typical Asian rhinoplasty is technically different than other ethnic groups but satisfaction is related to the patient's goals and expectations established by an experienced specialist pre-operatively. There is not a specific common complaint among Asians and their level of satisfaction is the same as all Rhinoplasty patients.

Overview of Asian Rhinoplasty

This is obviously a generic statement but generally speaking the Asian nose has a tip with inadequate projection "TIP", a wide alar base, and insufficuent dorsal height. The surgical strategy is one of "addition" rhinoplasty- columellar strut, alar base narrowing, dorsal onlay grafting. This is the opposite strategy in a Caucasian nose, where often reduction of dorsal height and tip projection are common maneuvers - "subtraction" rhinoplasty. If a surgeon performs a perfect... more
